Help needed for Oklahoma!

30 09 2008

We’re 10 days from opening night, and need to wrap up some last-minute things:

  1. Here’s the list of props that we need but haven’t been able to get our hands on yet:
    • Old-fashioned “bloomers”
    • Large leather satchel/bag
    • Old-fashioned flannel, full-length nightgown
    • Pair of corsets (Parisian style)
    • Large cast-iron stove
    • Assorted farm tools–shovel, rake, hoes, hand plows
    • Oil lantern
    • Ribbons for hair
    • Bandanas
    • Mason jars
    • Garters
  2. Parents–we need to begin handing out concession stand duties to you.  Please reply to me with the performances during which you’d be willing to work the concession stand and I’ll make out the schedule.  The food and soda has already been donated!
  3. Ad sales–wrap ‘em up and get them in now!  I can slip last-minute ads into the program up to this coming Friday.
  4. Rehearsals–Everyone needs to plan to stay after school every day this week and begin dress rehearsals at 6 pm Mon-Wed next week.  Everyone.  Every day.  We also have a dress rehearsal scheduled for this coming Sunday at 2 pm (check your syllabus!)
  5. Stay positive.  The show is going well and looking good!

Concert Attire Update–Dress sizes due in one week!

22 09 2008

I’ve gotten behind on ordering dresses for Concert Choir and Ensemble, so I’m changing the concert attire requirement for the mid-term concert (October 16) to “Sunday Best” for all enesmbles:

  • Ladies–wear a nice , knee-length dress (please, no halter-tops and bare shoulders) and closed-toe shoes.
  • Gentlemen–dress shoes, slacks, button-down shirt, and a tie that doesn’t feature cartoon characters.

Concert Choir and Ensemble ladies:  I need your dress size information so that we can place the dress order and have them in by the holiday concert.  Please click here and go to the size chart on page C2 to determine your correct dress size.  Don’t assume that a size 4 at, say, JC Penney necessarily corresponds to a size 4 with Southeastern Apparel.  Go through the measuring process and make sure!

Email me your correct size by Tuesday Sep 30 (make sure you include your name in your email).

Gentlemen:  If you want me to order a tux shirt for you, email me by Sep 30 with your shirt size (click here for the size chart and use “Chart Q on page C5).

If I don’t hear from you by the 30th, I can’t guarantee that you’ll have what you need for the holiday concert, and you won’t be allowed to perform without acceptable concert attire.  Also, you must have enough funds in your chorus account to cover any purchase before I can place your order. Dresses are $60, tux shirts are $12, 3-piece tux ensembles (shirt, slacks, bowtie, and cumberbund) are $35.

Note:  auditioning students are required to be in the designated warmup area one hour prior to their scheduled audition time (the exception is the ever-exceptional Brandon Dalton, who “only” has to be there by 8:30 am).  You may be called up to one hour before your scheduled time.

Also, I strongly encourage each of you to attend the All State Choir Workshop at Maryville College (click here for directions) on Monday, Sep 29, from 5 pm ’til 7:30 pm.  It’s a great way to solidify your knowledge of the music and nail down those parts.  The workshop is free and includes a performance by MC’s Off Kilter Ensemble.

Lastly, don’t forget–I’ll meet with auditionees to work on the music throughout the week during my plan time (3rd block).  Come during your lunch break and we’ll work.  Also, we’ll work the ladies’ parts Thursday at 7:30 am and the men’s parts Friday at 7:30 am.

Oklahoma! Dream Ballet previews

21 09 2008

I’ve uploaded the video from today’s choreography rehearsal–the ballet was too long for my camera to capture the whole thing so it’s in 3 parts.  You can view them directly from the VodPod widget in the right-hand pane on the blog, or just use these links:

Brandon Was Right

20 09 2008

Ok–props go to Brandon Dalton for correctly suggesting that the word mien in “If Music Be the Food of Love” is pronounced “meen” instead of “main” as I had taught Concert Choir.  Consider this Illustration #40 in the “Just Because You Heard It Done That Way In The Past Doesn’t Necessarily Make It The Right Way To Do It” book I’m going to write one day.

As a reward, Brandon will be allowed to pester Mr. Davis during home room for the remainder of the semester….

Oh, wait a minute….

Ensemble Rehearsal Changes

19 09 2008

Beginning this coming Monday, I’m changing the Ensemble rehearsal schedule so that we’ll have full-ensemble rehearsals at 7:30 Monday, Tuesday, and Wednesday instead of Monday-Tuesday sectionals.  We’ll keep this rehearsal pace through the mid-term concert on October 16, and go back to sectional rehearsals to learn the Christmas music after that.

Also, several Ensemble folks have gotten into the habit of showing up for the last 20 minutes of rehearsal only, and to this point I’ve not said anything.  I’ll start saying things next week that will sound a lot like “Don’t bother coming back” so that we can know who’s in and who’s not.

Picture Day for Oklahoma! cast

16 09 2008

We’ll shoot headshots for the Oklahoma! program this coming Thursday (Sep 18) during lunch.  Make sure you come by the choir room during your lunch that day and have your picture taken for inclusion in the program.  I’ll make sure the principals know that you’re expected to come by.

Don’t miss it, but if you do, come by during the tutoring period for a makeup.

Also, start working on your bio for the program.  You can download the form by clicking here.  Get in ASAP–several drug their feet for Beauty and the Beast and were left out.
