All-East Stuff (no results yet)

6 10 2008

Because I’ve gotten so many questions about the All-East results, I figured it’d be best to just do a post about the process so that everyone knows as much as I do.  Here’s what I know:

  1. This is the first year that directors were not allowed into the scoring room to get preliminary scores on their students.  Before, directors could hang around on the day of the audition and walk away with a reasonably accurate idea of who scored well and who didn’t.  This year, the results will be posted online for everyone to see at the same time.  The website for the East Tennessee Vocal Association is http://etva.org.
  2. The directors were told to expect All-East results “early this coming week.”  I’ll get an email from ETVA telling me that the results are up and I’ll post the results on West High Choir Guy as well.
  3. Individual scores for auditioning students will not be posted on the website–only the names of the students who have been accepted into the All-East Choirs.  The individual scores for those students who make All-State will be posted when those results are announced in November.
  4. ETVA will send me the scoring cards for West High students so that you can see how you scored and where you can improve.  Don’t worry–I won’t be posting the cards on the bulletin board, either!
  5. The size of the All-East choir varies from year to year, i.e., the selection committee is under no obligation to fill up a certain number of seats regardless of the quality of the auditions.  The buzz in the hallway after the auditions where done was that students were “unusually unprepared” this year, which indicates that the All-East choir may be smaller.
  6. This was my first time at All-East auditions since I was a senior in high school in 1986 (yes, I do turn 40 this year), and I learned a lot!  Now that I’ve seen the process from the inside I have a load of ideas for how we’re going to attack this in the future.  We’ll tighten up our preparation strategy next year and make sure everyone who auditions will be confident in their part and in how to present their best performance at the auditions.
That’s all I know so far!  Congratulations to everyone who took the time to prepare and audition, regardless of the results.  I’m proud of you!
Oklahoma! here we come!
