Moving day for the WHCG Blog

23 11 2008

Knox County Schools switched over to the SchoolFusion web content management system this fall–online pages for teacher’s classes, etc.  I took the class this summer and could see that the days of a standalone blog were numbered, but waited until they activated the blogging feature before making the move.

Well, it’s moving day!

The new address for my blog is http://davis.wesths.knoxschools.org.

New Ensemble Rehearsal Schedule

2 11 2008

Ensemble folks–after a not-so-scientific survey/family talk with several of you last week, I’ve decided to change our schedule for Ensemble rehearsals to Tuesday, Wednesday, and Thursday mornings at 7:30.  We’ll do full rehearsals (i.e., everyone shows) unless you’re told otherwise.

Practically speaking, this means that our next rehearsal will be this coming Wednesday, Nov 5 (Tuesday is a student holiday).

Requests for us to sing in the community are starting to stack up, and I need to nail down our commitments ASAP.  This Wednesday I will be asking for commitments from Ensemble members to attend all rehearsals for the rest of the term.  I need to know what your commitment level is before I commit us to the different performing opportunities.

Bring your calendars with you on Wednesday–we’ll be looking at available dates for performances.

All-East Screening Information

2 11 2008

The screening auditions for the All-East clinic will be held at the new Hardin Valley Academy (click here to go to google maps, or just use the directions below).  Check-in begins at 4:00 pm, auditions begin at 4:30.

Once you get there, you’ll get your audition time and an “excerpt page” which will detail the start/stop measures in the pieces you’ll be singing.  It’s a good idea to go ahead and mark your music with this information so there’s no confusion once you’re in the room with the judges.

The judges will be listening for 80% accuracy on the music–it doesn’t have to be perfect, but you do have to show that you’ve been working on the music and can get it with at least 80% accuracy.

Be prepared to stay late.  If the judges feel that you don’t know your music with 80% accuracy, you may be recalled toward the end of the evening.  I’ve been told that we may be there as late as 8 pm.

Directions to HVA

  • From Sevier County/Knoxville: Take I-40 W to Pellessippi Parkway (to Oak Ridge). Take the Hardin Valley Road exit. At the stop light turn left. The auditorium is straight ahead through the entrance.

Cheesecake, Cheesecake, Cheesecake!

29 10 2008

Both choirs and the Musical Theater class are selling cheesecakes for Thanksgiving delivery.  Students should have forms with them, or they may pick them up in the choir room.

Here are the details:

  • Cheesecakes are 2-pounders, (8 slices per!).  They’re plenty good, too.
  • Cheesecakes come in 4 varieties:  New York (plain), Strawberry Swirl, Chocolate Lover’s Variety (2 slices apiece of Mississippi Mud, Fudge Brownie, Caramel Turtle, and Triple Chocolate), and the Variety Sampler (2 slices apiece of Triple Chocolate, New York Style, Strawberry Swirl, and Mississippi Mud).
  • We’re selling them for $16 per cake.  Sweet deal!
  • The campaign is over (i.e., all orders and all money in to Mr. Davis) Monday, November 10.  Orders submitted without money will not be counted toward your total, and Mr. Davis will not include them in the order he places with the company.

Here are the incentive deals:

  • 1st student to sell 40 cheesecakes–$40
  • Students get to draw once from the cash envelope for every 6 cheesecakes sold.
  • The top seller after the first day will have his or her cash drawings tripled in value
  • Students who sell 16 cheesecakes get one free, plus a free cheesecake for every 10 sold thereafter

Some students are already having loads of success!  Start stocking your choral accounts NOW while the Thanksgiving season is here!

New Twitter Feed for the Choir Guy

27 10 2008

West High Choir Guy now has a Twitter feed for those of you who love text messaging and don’t care so much to check your email or blog readers (it turns out there’s more of you out there than I thought).

If you already have a Twitter account, just follow the Choir Guy feed at http://twitter.com/whschoirguy.  I’ll update the feed only when I update the blog or when I need to get information to you quickly.  Don’t worry about getting too many updates from the Choir Guy–I keep a separate personal feed for nonsense like “sitting @ Starbuck’s reading the latest Patrick O’Ryan novel.”

If you don’t have a Twitter account, you might want to look into it, especially if you love to text and hate to check email (you know who you are).  Read up on the Twitter article at Wikipedia for more information, or just head over to the Twitter page and set up a free account.
